DEDICATED TO MACHINIMA THE NEWEST IN COMPETITION SECTION OF THE SHORT FILM FESTIVAL MESTRE FILM FEST 2011

From October 13th to 15th 2011, the Candiani Cultural Center will hold the fourteenth edition of the international short film festival, organized by the Videoteca di Mestre at the Candiani Cultural Center.

One of the in competition sections, Corti&Web, will be dedicated to a rising new genre this year, the Machinima, namely, videos created using the graphic engines of video games. The initiative was a response to the great interest elicited by the I Play Videogame project, an exploration into the video game universe with show, events, screenings and live challenges, all hosted at the Candiani from November 8th to December 19th 2011 and now with NEOLUDICA. ART IS A GAME 2011-1966.

Machinima, a term that merges the words “machine” and “cinema”, describes the use of real-time 3D computer graphics rendering engines to create a cinematic productions,
in the most literal sense, since the 3D graphic engines are used by users to develop stories. The sheer number of video game adaptations realized for the big screen in the past two decades is striking and elicits a reflection on the interaction between cinema and video games.

The Mestre Film Fest will only accept submissions from works produced after December 31st 2009 and which fall under the allowed categories. The materials must be submitted and received by the Videoteca di Mestre by and no later than August 20th 2011.

The Short in Web 2011 Award (€ 500),  a brand new award this year, is dedicated to Machinima, videos made with the graphic engines of video games. The best film will be selected by the jury chaired by Margherita Balzerani, artistic director of Atopic – Festival de Films Machinima of Paris and also including contemporary and new media art curator and critic, Domenico Quaranta and Andrea Desseno, director of the Archivio Videoludico at the Bologna Cineteca.

The Mestre Film Fest is organized by the Videoteca di Mestre – Candiani Cultural Center, Circuito Cinema Comunale, Office of Youth Policies and Peace, UNICEF Veneto Regional Committee, Trattoria dall’Amelia - Boscarato Ristorazione, Lions Club Mestre Castelvecchio, El Leon in Moleca Cultural Association and Cinit-Cineforum Italiano, under the auspices of Aesvi and the partnership of the Musea Game Art Gallery, Fabbrica Arte and E-Ludo .
